Knipser 2009 Dirmstein Mandelpfad GG Riesling (Pfalz)
Editors' Choice
Price
$45
Ripe peaches balance quince and citrus, and plenty of wet stone and brine notes provide backbone and textural richness. Harmony, length and minerality are all here in a wine that’s relatively affordable by Grosses Gewächs standards.

Knipser 2009 Kalkmergel Spätlese Trocken Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$35
Kalkmergel refers to the chalky marl soils, which are said to yield powerful and mineral wines. This is a wonderfully complex example, with scents of musk, quince and brine all combining easily into a knockout aroma. It’s citrusy and fresh, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now–2016, possibly longer.

Knipser 2005 Himmelsrech Dirmsteiner Mandelpfad Spätlese Trocken Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$48
From a top site, this is a big, full-bodied dry Riesling that features aromas of honey, mint and Golden Delicious apple. Those ripe apple notes continue on the palate, picking up citrus and herbal notes on the extended finish.

Knipser 2005 Steinbuckel Laumersheimer Mandelberg Spätlese Trocken Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$48
This wine lacks the richness and texture of Knipser’s Im Großen Garten bottling, but more than makes up for it with complex notes of spring flowers, bergamot, spice and mineral. Long and crisp on the finish, with potential to possibly improve up to 10 years.

This unique blend of 51% Gewürz and 49% Riesling boasts an expressive and flowery bouquet of spice, baked apples and pears, and hints of lychee fruit. Full-bodied without being heavy, it finishes off-dry, with impressive notes of bergamot. Imported by Magellan Wine Imports.

Knipser 2008 Trocken Chardonnay Weissburgunder (Pfalz)
Online Exclusive
Price
$25
Slight hint of sulfur at first, but it blows off and the nose opens to reveal a rich medley of ripe orchard fruit tinged with dried tarragon and savory spice. Crisp, bright and laden with a patchwork of flavors: ripe apples, pears and stone fruit against a backdrop of earthy minerality. Broad yet only medium bodied, with a moderately long finish.

Knipser 2004 Steinbuckel Grosses Gewächs Spätlese Trocken Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$46
Relatively round and lush for a dry German Riesling, with pronounced ripeness and texture. A hint of diesel marks the bouquet, followed by scents of superripe apples, honey and dried apricot, while the flavors add notes of mineral and spice. A long, spice-driven finish completes the package.

Knipser 2006 Kalkmergel Spätlese Trocken Riesling (Pfalz)
Price
$42
Kalkmergel refers to a soil type (chalky), rather than a specific vineyard site. This is a thickly concentrated dry Riesling, with aromas of pineapple, honey and petrol and flavors that across as citrusy and honeyed yet dry. Long and salty-minerally on the finish.
