Kono Barú 2005 Shiraz (South Eastern Australia)

  1. $13
This is a clean and fruity Shiraz—and one that fits the Australian success formula almost predictably. Jammy blackberry and cassis fruit is framed by touches of oak-derived vanilla and spice, tannins are soft and the mouthfeel supple. It’s well done, even if it lacks a certain degree of individuality.  — J.C.  (11/15/2007)

Kono Barú 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (Central Valley)

  1. $13
A little char and herbal lift accent the confected nose on this Central Valley wine. The palate is jammy sweet with raspberry and cherry flavors, while the finish shows a dose of Cabernet character but mostly just pleasant, innocuous sweetness.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Kono Barú 2006 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $16
Mildly grassy and dilute on the nose, with sweet, candied berry flavors and a sticky, woody finish. It’s fairly full in the mouth, but it lacks the precision, darkness and focus of a top-flight Malbec.  — M.S.  (10/1/2007)

Kono Barú 2005 Riesling (South Eastern Australia)

  1. $13
Broad and mouthfilling, this latest venture into the Southern Hemisphere from Don Sebastiani & Sons lacks the freshness and vitality of the best Australian Rieslings, instead showing simple melon and anise flavors.  — J.C.  (9/1/2008)

Kono Barú 2006 Unwooded Chardonnay (Central Valley)

  1. $13
Racy and loaded with apricot, melon, apple and corn aromas and flavors. It’s sweet and sticky on the palate, while the finish is ponderous.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Kono Barú 2006 Sauvignon Blanc (Central Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $13
Peaches and cream on the nose? And this is supposed to be Sauvignon Blanc, a wine known for its piquant pungency? Guess not, because it’s full of soft, flabby peach and papaya flavors rather than citrus and snap. Get it while it still has a pulse.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)
