Kunde 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

This grower-turned-vintner pulls out all the stops. This is as good as the appellation gets. Displays classic Cabernet notes of cassis and olives, framed in gorgeously smoked oak. Dry, luscious tannins, creamy acids. If there's a criticism, it's a little too obvious. Think finesse. Napa has it. So far, Sonoma Valley, even at this level, doesn't.

Fans of spicy, bold Chards will love this one. Huge aromas of ripe peaches and pineapple, cinnamon, buttered toast and smoke are followed by layered flavors and textures. Dramatic, showy and extravagant, this complex wine finishes with honeyed sweetness.

Kunde 2000 Reserve Chardonnay (Sonoma Valley)

A terrifically flamboyant wine, filled with jazzy flavors that impress for their sheer hedonism. Peaches and pears veer way over to tropical fruits, and there’s a lot of oak and lees to boot. The rich, creamy texture leads to a long, spicy finish in this young, delicious wine.

Really too young to drink now—it’s tannic and acidic, with that primary fruit jamminess of an immature wine. Yet it’s an excellent Cabernet. Should only improve over the next two or three years.

Kunde 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

Here’s a rich, dense, impressive Cab. It shows soft acids, melted tannins and beautifully ripe cassis, black currant, black cherry pie and milk chocolate flavors, with well-integrated smoky oak notes, and is thoroughly dry. It doesn’t seem like an ager, but is delicious now and for the next few years.

This outstanding Chard is polished and absolutely delicious. The pineapple, peach, pear and nectarine flavors have been enhanced with charry oak and a dose of lees. Creamy smooth in texture, this flavorful wine is sprinkled with a sweet tang of spice that lasts through the long finish.

Kunde 1998 Reserve Chardonnay (Sonoma Valley)

A tremendously rich, oaky Chard that will blast your socks off and then some. The fruit is really complex, ranging from green apples to savory ripe peaches on into tropical fruit, and there's a dusty sprinkling of cinnamon and ginger. For sur-lie freaks, there's lots of creamy, yeasty, nutty notes contributing to this delicious, hard-hitting wine.

Kunde 2007 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

Tightly wound, with oak sticking out, big tannins and a solid inner core of vibrant, red cherry and red currant fruit. There’s a fine wine in here, but it just needs a few years to come out. Drink 2011–2014.
