La Colombina 2000 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
Starts with a lot of creamy vanilla and berry perfume aromas, which don’t really tip you off to the zesty, racy fruit that’s been crammed onto the palate. Medium tannins and fairly chewy on the tongue, with a juicy finish that still has plenty of sweet vanilla and chocolate characteristics. Imported by Michael Skurnik Wines.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

La Colombina 2006 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $42
There’s a smoky, meaty quality here with mature fruit, cola, mesquite and cured meat nuances in the background. La Colombina boasts impressive intensity and lingering spice flavors.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

La Colombina 2001 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $45
Clover, dried grass, Oriental spice, rhubarb and intense balsam notes highlight a cherry-vanilla driven wine. Thickly concentrated with very solid tannins and mineral notes woven throughout a long finish. Imported by Michael Skurnik Wines.  — W.E.  (4/1/2006)

La Colombina 2004 Riserva Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $75
This Brunello Riserva delivers subdued aromas of cherry, blackberry, tar and spice. There’s a sour cherry theme in the mouth and the finish is bright and crisp. It is, however, a very food-friendly wine thanks to the acidity. Pair it with grilled meats, wild mushroom risotto or cheesy pasta.  — M.L.  (10/1/2010)

La Colombina 2006 Palpito Red (Sant'Antimo)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
Top 100 Best Buys 2011
Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are the base of this well concentrated and ripe super Tuscan blend. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, blueberry and hints of clove, smoke and cured meat make for a beautiful bouquet. The mouthfeel is equally smooth and complex.  — M.L.  (12/15/2010)

La Colombina 2005 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $40
There’s a meaty, smoked element to the nose of this Brunello that recalls beef jerky or sizzling bacon. Those hearty aromas are followed by delicate layers of blackberry, cherry and spice. The wine is bright and acidic in the mouth, which makes for an excellent balance.  — M.L.  (10/1/2010)

La Colombina 1999 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

Dark and muscular up front, with aromas of tar, smoke and charred beef. Below that brooding surface you’ll find jammy fruit mixed with tobacco and herbs. Not a classic, but still a very good wine on the chunky side.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)

La Colombina 2007 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $40
This wine strikes a nice balance between sweet and savory spice on the nose, with ripe fruit, prune and leather in the background. This is a velvety, warm, earthy wine with a broad aromatic delivery and bold Brunello style. It’s smooth and round, without any of the sharp acidic accents you sometimes find in Sangiovese Grosso.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)
