La Gerla 2007 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
Ripe fruit and red cherry, with spice, cinnamon and wood shop aromas, characterize the youthful bouquet of La Gerla’s latest Brunello. But there’s also a pretty mineral tone that gives the nose backbone and definition. It is delicate and feminine in the mouth, with elegant flavors of wild berry and blue flower that will surely grow in intensity as the wine evolves…  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

La Gerla 2006 Riserva gli Angeli Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $70
Always a beautiful wine, this edition of Riserva gli Angeli is austere, sophisticated, lean and elegant. It shows a fine, silky texture with bright aromas of wild berry, cola and mint. There are also interesting tertiary aromas of leather, dusty mineral and cured meat at the back.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

La Gerla 1997 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $55
The land from which this wine comes was once owned by the Biondi-Santi family. It forms part of an 18-acre estate belonging to Sergio Rossi. It is a stunning wine, with a sense of fine poise combined with solid tannins and firm, ripe fruit. At the back of the palate is a lingering flavor ofviolets and sweet herbs. Drink from 2005; the wine should age well.  — R.V.  (8/1/2002)

La Gerla 2001 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
This wine left our panel deeply divided and tested our threshold for modern Brunello. One panelist loved the chocolate fudge, black cherry, fennel seed, bacon fat and toasted notes. To a second panelist, the wine was disjointed and over-oaked. Drink by 2015. Imported by Opici Import Company.  — W.E.  (4/1/2006)

La Gerla 2004 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $42
La Gerla delivers a soft and succulent texture with rich tones of milk chocolate and fudge behind layers of cherry and wild berry. The plush and rich nature of this wine sets it apart and this Brunello is long-lasting and caressing on the close with bright tones of cherry and vanilla.  — M.L.  (6/1/2009)

La Gerla 2004 Vigna gli Angeli Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $48
Vigna gli Angeli is a rich and muscular Brunello that is redolent of blackberries, spice, peppercorn, licorice, leather and prunes. Think big concentration and black fruit. Despite the intensity and massiveness of the nose, this wine is delicately fresh and persistent in the mouth thanks to its firm tannins.  — M.L.  (6/1/2009)
