La Rochelle 2005 Garys' Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  1. $52
Very full-bodied and rich, offering a wealth of ripe fruit and even some dry, gritty tannins, this will stand some time in the cellar. It’s explosive in red and black cherry pie, currant, raspberry and cola flavors, with a rich edge of melted milk chocolate, and the vanilla spice and caramel of new oak. Just a tremendous palate experience.  — S.H.  (8/1/2008)

La Rochelle 2003 Classic Clones Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
Easily the best of La Rochelle’s three Pinots, with a zesty acidity that frames ripe cherries, pomegranates, cola, oak and citrus zest. The Arroyo Seco is an under-appreciated appellation in Salinas Valley, while the clonal mix of this wine consists of older selections, not today’s cleaned-up Dijon specimens. This is a complex, addictive Pinot. Best now and for a…  — S.H.  (7/1/2006)

La Rochelle 2001 San Vicente Vineyard Pinot Noir (Monterey)

  1. $30
An exceedingly fine Pinot, as juicy as they get. Oodles of elaborate cherry, raspberry, root beer, gingerbread and mocha flavors, oaky and spicy, wrapped in a silky texture, with clean, bright acidity. Shows real complexity and finesse.  — S.H.  (12/15/2004)

La Rochelle 2009 Four Sisters Vineyard Pinot Meunier (Sonoma Coast)

  1. $38
Light in body, silky and acidic, made in a more elegant and sophisticated style than some of those bigger, extracted Pinots. Almost like a white wine, but with intense raspberry and cherry fruit, cola, rosehip tea, spice and oak flavors. Decant for a few hours, or drink over the next three years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

La Rochelle 2005 Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  1. $38
Shows much of the richness and complexity of the winery’s single-vineyard bottlings from the appellation, but at a lower price, which makes it a good value. It’s a dry, softly tannic wine, rich and elaborate in cherry, raspberry, blackberry, currant, mocha, cola and spice flavors that go on and on.  — S.H.  (8/1/2008)

La Rochelle 2010 Pinot Noir Rosé (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  1. $22
Tasted in June following the vintage, this blush wine had a slight effervescence, like a sparkling wine, with a tingly mouthfeel that was by no means unpleasant. In fact, it was very good, giving a clean, lively tang to the strawberry, yeast, vanilla, citrus and spice flavors. Unconventional, but a beautiful rosé that gets better as it warms in the glass.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

La Rochelle 2008 Sarmento Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  1. $48
Combines tight tannins and acids with concentrated raspberry, cherry, Dr. Pepper cola and oak flavors to produce a vigorous, young, savory Pinot Noir. Feels silky in the mouth, yet potent in fruity concentration. There’s some burn in the finish, but a good steak will take care of that. Give it a year or two to mellow.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

La Rochelle 2005 Classic Clones Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)

  1. $42
Here’s a big, ripe, dry, complex, voluptuous Pinot that comes from a cool Monterey region better known for dry whites. It shows a nice tension between acidity, silky tannins, charred, sweet oak and bright, pure fruit flavors of cherries, cola and raspberries, with a slightly funky, leathery undertow.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)
