Labyrinth 2002 Valley Farm Vineyard Pinot Noir (Yarra Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
This is a delicately sized Pinot, even by Burgundian standards. But boy, is it good. Starts off with bark and trading-card bubblegum powder aromas, and displays long, lasting tannins on the palate. Cherry and plum flavors are subtle at first, and grow juicier and more intense with air. Elegant and delicious. 100 cases produced. Imported by Australian Wine Connection.  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)

Labyrinth 2005 Haka Reserve Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $50
There may be a good Pinot in here, but right now it’s buried under tart acids and a veneer of tannins more likely to be encountered with a Rhône wine. The flavors, which are ripe and deep, are of red cherries, cola and sandalwood. Roll the dice and try after the winter of 2010.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Labyrinth 2003 Viggers Vineyard Pinot Noir (Yarra Valley)

  1. $42
This Pinot is texturally very interesting, its robust, wooly tannins well obscuring the cherry and cola flavors underneath. That will change in the short term, I expect; a more integrated wine would lead to an even more favorable review. 283 cases produced. Imported by Australian Wine Connection.  — D.T.  (12/1/2005)

Labyrinth 2002 Viggers Vineyard Pinot Noir (Yarra Valley)

  1. $45
I liked this wine very much, but not quite as much as Labyrinth’s Valley Farm Pinot. This one has aromas of amaretto and hard cheese rind, and more giving flavors of black cherry and toast. Tannins are nicely textured—furry, almost. Very good; 100 cases produced. Imported by Australian Wine Connection.  — D.T.  (10/1/2005)

Labyrinth 2007 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $35
Dry, earthy and somewhat closed now, this shy wine isn’t offering much beyond the tannins, oak and sour cherry candy fruit. Yet it’s excellently structured, and seems to want a few years to knit together and mellow. Try 2010–2013.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Labyrinth 2007 Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
Tart and zingy in acidity, and a little one-dimensional, but otherwise a pretty good expression of cool, coastal California Pinot Noir. Shows cherry and cola flavors, with a hint of rhubarb pie, and is entirely dry. Drink now.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Labyrinth 2004 Viggers Vineyard Pinot Noir (Yarra Valley)

  1. $39
Shows slightly better length than the 2004 Valley Farm Vineyard Pinot from winemaker Ariki Hill, but this bottling is still a delicate, lighter-bodied style. Black cherry, cola and savory, mushroomy notes give it a dark flavor profile, while supple tannins impart a dusty mouthfeel. Drink now–2010.  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Labyrinth 2002 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $28
Shows that Santa Maria cool-climate thing in the beet and slightly tomatoey notes that accompany the cola flavors. Bone dry and pretty acidic, but clean and elegant. Not an ager, so drink now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)
