You can’t smell acidity, but you can smell fruit so bright, it has to be high in acidity. This Chard is rewardingly pure and sharp in Key lime pie, papaya purée, fresh juicy tangerine and smoky, vanilla-infused oak flavors, and it grows more interesting with every sip.

Lafond 2000 Sweeny Canyon Vineyard Chardonnay (Santa Ynez Valley)

Elaborately oaked, and opens with a smooth waft of buttered toast, smoky char and vanilla. There are hints of fruit in the aroma, but it’s on the palate that the flavors really hit. Tropical fruits, mainly, with hints of white peach, and a sleek minerality that’s part acidity, part stony terrior. Complex, young and compelling.

Very good Syrah, with tight, astringently young tannins courtesy of the region’s cool climate. Impressive for its balance, a big, rich, dry wine with ripe blackberry, coffee and white pepper flavors and an elegant, upscale mouthfeel. Drink now through 2010. Excellent value for the price.

Lafond 2007 SRH Chardonnay (Sta. Rita Hills)

Good price for such a nice Chardonnay from the Santa Rita Hills. The wine is very dry and crisp in acidity, with a bracing mouthfeel that offers rich, oak-inspired flavors of pineapples, pears and green apples. Nice now with Ahi tuna tartare or grilled salmon.

Lafond 2006 Lafond Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

This is a big, ripe, full-bodied and oaky Pinot Noir. It’s too powerful to drink now, unless you don’t mind immaturity. The raspberry, cherry and blood orange flavors are of the pie-filling type, and the oak sticks out in smoky, vanilla sweetness. Give it 4–5 years in the cellar to come around.

Lafond 1998 Lafond Vineyard Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley)

Mingles ripe blackberry and blueberry flavors with earthy, truffly notes. There are also suggestions of coffee, chocolate and bouquet garni, as well as solidly smoked oak. Very dry, with soft, supple tannins and good acidity from a cool vintage. Much better than a previous sample.

Lafond 1997 Lafond Vineyard Chardonnay (Santa Ynez Valley)

Attractive nose of spice, pear, cinnamon and even anise. Understated and elegant, this wine is appealing for its restraint. The palate displays good mouthfeel marked by sweet-tart pear flavors and fine balance. Long, dry finish; not flashy, rather a very stylish and subtly seductive wine.

From the new Santa Rita Hills appellation, this inky-dark, purple wine stains the sides of the glass, one indication of how big and young it is. It has the jammy berry flavors and insolent acidity of youth, while oversize tannins make it muscular. Not drinkable now, except with the biggest foods. Try aging until 2006.
