Seems very oaky, with in-your-face aromas of vanilla, char and pepper, but the fruit is able to support it. In fact, the underlying flavors are rich and gorgeous. It shows Cabernet’s cassis and blackberry aromatics, with the soft tannins and velvety, drink-me-now texture of Merlot.

Lambert Bridge 1998 Crane Creek Cuvee Red (Dry Creek Valley)

A really wonderful wine. It seems classic Dry Creek Valley, in terms of bright, spicy fruit, as polished as marble on the surface, with maybe less stuffing than, say, Napa. But that’s not to put it down. Racy tannins and dry acids make it competitive in a worldwide market.

Mainly Merlot, this Bordeaux blend is enormously rich in sweet cassis, cherry and cedar. It’s assertive in that way, yet possesses an elegant architecture composed of rich, dusty tannins and crisp acids. Should hold well for at least five years.

Lovely wine that is true to the spirit of old-vine Zinfandel yet remains elegant and sleek as a 1999 Jaguar. There’s Carignane and Petite Sirah in the blend, adding to the complexity and depth. Limited production, so shop early and often.

Made from about 90% Dry Creek fruit, Lambert Bridge’s Merlot is very dry and softly scented with red cherry, sweet pipe tobacco and coffee flavors nudging into cocoa. It has a delicate, refined mouthfeel, showing less power than sheer finesse.

Very bright, pure fruit; lemony and citrusy, with a nutty, figgy note from a small amount of Sémillon. Creamy, rich, almost opulent flavors cascade over the palate. The finish is long and distinctly lemony. Best Buy.
