Langmeil 2008 The Freedom 1843 Shiraz (Barossa)

  1. $100
Named for the year the vineyard was planted, this is a full-bore Barossa fruit bomb—in a positive way. Waves of lush berry fruit are framed by hints of vanilla and mint in this full-bodied, creamy-textured wine that somehow manages to retain a sense of elegance and proportion.  — J.C.  (2/1/2012)

Langmeil 2002 The Freedom Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $60
The first acre of this vineyard was planted in 1843, in pre-phylloxera days; the fruit is dry-grown, handpicked—treated with all the care that a winery's flagship bottling gets. Has an alluring putty note on the nose, and smooth, fine tannins on theplaalte. Concentration is excellent, and the plum and berry fruit pure and ripe. Finishes with a surge of tannins…  — D.T.  (3/1/2005)

Langmeil 2002 The Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon (Barossa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Certainly appropriately named, but so terribly charming, irresistible and unusual. Smoldering, dark, briary, stably aromas are streaked with aromatic eucalyptus. On the palate, it's incredibly concentrated, with more smoldering aromas: black soil, black fruit, smoke, even walnut and hazelnut. Still, there's a shining core of red fruit deep in there, like a glowing…  — D.T.  (3/1/2005)

Langmeil 2008 Hangin' Snakes Shiraz-Viognier (Barossa)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Full bodied yet surprisingly light on its feet, the 2008 Hangin’ Snakes represents a terrific value. Peppered meat, fresh berries, coffee and black olive notes add up to a complex, savory wine, framed by soft tannins. Drink now–2017.  — J.C.  (2/1/2012)

Langmeil 2008 Orphan Bank Shiraz (Barossa)

  1. $50
Score Chasers: NZ & AU 2011
This full-bodied, lushly textured wine makes for a sumptuous mouthful of Barossa Shiraz. Two years in French oak has given it a cedary polish, but the fruit is assertive enough to retain center stage. That said, it’s as much savory as it is fruity, with hints of spice and roasted meat lingering on the finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2011)

Langmeil 1985 Liqueur Shiraz Tawny (Barossa Valley)

  1. $56
This tawny Shiraz has a good backbone but positively melts in the mouth. It's warming and seductive on the palate, with hazelnut and honey flavors joining more expected plum and blackberry characters of Shiraz. Gorgeous.  — D.T.  (3/1/2005)

Langmeil 2008 Valley Floor Shiraz (Barossa)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
A terrific value in Barossa Shiraz, Langmeil’s 2008 Valley Floor bottling features bold oak-fruit styling without ever seeming jammy. It’s full bodied but not unstructured, with mulberries and toasted coconut upfront yet a fresh, savory finish framed by dusty tannins. Drink now–2018.  — J.C.  (2/1/2012)

Langmeil 2008 Jackaman's Cabernet Sauvignon (Barossa)

  1. $50
Can a Barossa Cabernet be said to be understated? Especially considering the warm vintage, this wine is wonderfully elegant and restrained, revealing hints of mint, cassis and oak. It’s full bodied and dense, yet remains fresh, with a long finish that artfully balances firmness and softness, crispness and weight. Drink now–2020.  — J.C.  (11/1/2011)
