Latitude 46° N 2004 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

A concentrated, young, satiny wine that mixes in 8% percent Grenache. Inky purple, it already is beginning to hint at developing layers of meat, smoke, tar and licorice, although the primary fruit flavors, sappy and concentrated, dominate. Latitude 46° N 2005 The Power and the Glory Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

Blended with 5% Grenache and 6% Mourvèdre. Raspberry and cherry and tart red fruits jump out; and the tannins remain young, hard and abrasive. This definitely needs some more bottle age; but it already shows fine fruit flavors that persist right through the young tannins. — P.G. (3/1/2007)

Latitude 46° N 2004 Katherine Leone Merlot (Wahluke Slope)

It begins with a pleasant nut rind aroma, then adds a bit of herb and leaf, and finally hits the center with ripe, chunky cherry fruit. This has the big, broad shoulders of fully-ripened Washington Merlot, with flesh and interesting herbal/spice notes. At 76% Syrah, this red blend (the balance is Grenache) just squeaked past our tasting censors. It’s a bit soft and jammy, also high in alcohol, but boasts loads of ripe cherry-berry fruit backed by a hint of chocolate. — W.E. (9/1/2005)
