Laurona 2000 Red (Montsant)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
A powerful, pretty wine with much of the qualities of a high-end Priorat, (Which makes sense because Montsant is right next door to Priorat.) it offers a bottomless nose of deep red fruit and flowers. That’s matched by the palate, which is ripe and everlasting as it transitions to the spicy, complex finish.  — M.S.  (3/1/2004)

Laurona 2000 6 Vinyes de Laurona Red (Montsant)

  1. $45
A millennium wine that’s now in fine form. It’s a typical Garnacha-Cariñena blend that runs heavy on Garnacha. The bouquet is strong and evolved, with leather and mineral along with aromas of crushed flower petals, asphalt and earth. Excellent fruit quality in the mouth; vivid with raspberry and black pepper. 800 cases made. Imported by multiple importers.  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Bingo! An excellent wine from a great vintage, simple as that. Exotic and complex aromas that highlight Middle Eastern spices, a silky palate and integrated tannins, what more could you want? How about a delicious mix of five grapes, incredibly harmonious and food friendly? No surprise it’s this good: It’s made by the team at Clos Mogador. Imported by multiple…  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Laurona 2004 Red (Montsant)

  1. $32
Subtle and balanced, and may show best with plenty of airing and/or decanting. In the meantime, expect modest plummy sweetness with a smack of herbal offset. It’s more simple and statuesque than lively or attention-grabbing. A Europvin, Christopher Cannan selection; Imported by multiple importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines.  — M.S.  (4/1/2009)

Laurona 2003 6 Vinyes de Laurona Red (Montsant)

  1. $27
Not exactly sleek but if you’re O.K. with better than average size, sweetness and heat, it’s more than fine. Aromas of sweet black plums are soft and stewy, yet the palate remains racy, with nervy cherry and raspberry flavors. A solid wine with just enough grit and bite.
