L'Aventure 2002 Optimus Red (Paso Robles)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
This complex Syrah and (with a little Zin) showcases both varieties at their western Paso Robles best. The Syrah is rich in dark berry-cherry and mocha flavors, while the Cabernet adds cassis and a nice tannic structure. I’m not sure what the 4 % of Zin brings, maybe a wild, peppery note. The final impression is of real class and distinction. Drink now and for the…  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)

L'Aventure 2000 Optimus Red (Paso Robles)

  1. $45
A blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petit Verdot. Massive berry and fruit flavors, accented with natural spices and 100% new French oak, and wrapped in fancy, smooth tannins. The wine feels important on the palate, and flatters it from entry through the long, delicious finish. It’s great to see Paso Robles step up to the plate and produce such…  — S.H.  (11/15/2003)

L'Aventure 2007 Cote a Cote Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre (Paso Robles)

  1. $85
Darker than most of the wines in a big Rhône tasting, this dramatic Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre bottling is full-bodied and rich. It offers waves of chocolate and blackberries, with oak providing a smoky, butterscotchy overlay. Drink this soft, flamboyant wine now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2009)

L'Aventure 2002 Estate Cuvee Red (Paso Robles)

  1. $80
A dramatic wine. Huge, almost overwhelming in the volume of cassis, cocoa, grilled meat and sweet oak flavors, yet elegantly dry and crisp. It has the most wonderful texture, mouthfilling and voluminous, yet somehow light as velvet. Finishes with a scour of tannins, but it’s probably not an ager. Drink now through 2007.  — S.H.  (6/1/2005)

L'Aventure 2000 Syrah (Paso Robles)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $40
The opening aroma is muted in fruit, dominated by white pepper and a landslide of new oak. You have to slosh it around the mouth to experience the depth and range of fruit, which is big and extraordinarily rich. Tannins are dry and complex. This is a wine obviously meant for the cellar, and it should glide through the next five years and turn into a very…  — S.H.  (12/15/2003)

L'Aventure 2002 Cuvee Cote a Cote Red (Paso Robles)

  1. $70
Quite delicious, and despite the full-bodiedness, it’s balanced and elegant. Offers a generous mouthful of black cherries, blackberries, chocolate and sweetmeats, wrapped in rich, thick, sweet tannins. Might be a little tricky to pair with foods due to high alcohol. Try something enormously rich. Grenache-Syrah blend.  — S.H.  (6/1/2005)

L'Aventure 2001 Optimus Red (Paso Robles)

  1. $45
From Rhône-possessed Paso Robles, an adventurous blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Zinfandel. The aroma is subdued now, closed and brooding. On the palate is an explosion of cassis, briar, chocolate and coffee. Sweet, ripe tannins make for a dusty mouthfeel. Needs a minimum of a year in the cellar.  — S.H.  (6/1/2004)

L'Aventure 2001 Syrah (Paso Robles)

There is certainly some warm weather influence in the sinfully ripe blackberry pie and cherry tart flavors. On the other hand, cooler winds from the Pacific have left intact the citrusy acidity and edgy tannins. The result is elegance and charm, a showcase for this emerging appellation.  — S.H.  (6/1/2004)
