Le Chiuse 2004 Riserva Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $120
Le Chiuse has produced one of Montalcino’s brightest stars with this Riserva 2004 (the base 2004 Brunello didn’t impress us as nearly much). This is a delicious wine that you will enjoy on every level. The intensity and purity of the fruit and spice aromas are impressive and the mouthfeel is extra-plush and supple. Yet, those firm tannins give it the balance and…  — M.L.  (8/1/2010)

This beautiful Brunello opens with lavish tones of dark fruit, exotic spice, espresso bean and crushed black pepper. The mouthfeel is interesting because it starts off bold and rich, but ends with the focused or chiseled sharpness that is typical of Sangiovese Grosso.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Le Chiuse 2005 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $80
This beautiful wine opens with impressive intensity and elegance. Aromas recall wild raspberry, cherry, cassis, cola and subtle spice shadings. Thanks to the silky nature of its tannins, you could pair this wine with lean meats like game hen or rabbit.  — M.L.  (10/1/2010)

Le Chiuse 2006 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

Here’s an interesting Brunello that recalls moist notes of forest floor and white mushroom, backed by cherry and wild berry. The wine opens with dense concentration and a dark ruby color. It ends with a long, polished feel.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

Le Chiuse 2001 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $50
A well-received Brunello with characteristic notes of earth, blackberry, cherry, dried spice, cola and cedar wood. We appreciated the balance, length and dusty tannic finish. Try with stewed game meat. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.  — W.E.  (4/1/2006)

Le Chiuse 1999 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

Dense and reduced, with cola and root beer aromas. This is not the liveliest Brunello going, which is proven by the modest tannins and equally moderate acids. Nonetheless, it’s not flabby or disproportionately flat. The flavors are good and the finish is long. But with a touch more zest it could be a high-flyer.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)

Charred almond and graham cracker notes need time to integrate. The wine is compact and lean in the mouth, with endnotes of small berry fruit, bramble, white almond and cola.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Le Chiuse 2006 Sangiovese Grosso (Rosso di Montalcino)

Spice and cherry aromas are pleasantly weaved together to form a cheerful and substantive wine. It’s a medium-bodied Rosso with bright cherry flavors that would pair well with pasta.  — M.L.  (11/1/2009)
