Lealtanza 2000 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$44
Medium-strength plum and cherry aromas mix with earth and leather on a bouquet that’s not all that fruity but still shows fruit. In the mouth, there’s raspberry and red plum flavors floating on juicy, snappy acidity. Mouthfilling but hardly ponderous. Stylish in a somewhat classic mode.

Lealtanza 2000 Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$16
Chunky and ripe, with more power and potency than precision or finesse. Which still means it’s pleasant, warm and tasty. The palate offers ample raisin and toffee, while the finish is aptly spicy. Good heft and texture, but short in the midsection.

Lealtanza 2006 Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)
Online Exclusive
Price
$20
Light and dominated by red fruit from the nose to the palate to the finish. Along the way are edgy accents of spice, stem, citrus and dry oak. Among all the big bruisers out there today, this is more from the old school, meaning it’s fresh, lithe and crisp.

Lealtanza 2005 Rosé Tempranillo (Rioja)
Online Exclusive
Price
$14
Dark in color. Cherry, raspberry and a touch of innertube rubber carry the nose toward a ripe palate featuring red apple and raspberry flavors. Finishes crisp and zesty, with nice acidity and commendable purity. Imported by Quality Wines of Spain.

Lealtanza 1999 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$45
Initial and secondary nosings reveal some green notes and barnyard, which dissolve a bit if given time but never quite leave the scene. The mouth offers loud plum and berry flavors, with a somewhat tannic finish. Nonetheless, it features good Rioja attributes; in the final analysis it’s a fairly good wine. Imported by Quality Wines of Spain.

Lealtanza 2000 Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$29
Hard leather and smoke aromas are the opening salvo, and there’s plenty of warm earth and cedar below deck. The palate is herbal and peppery, with a touch of burnt grass and green pepper sparring with plum and berry. Finishes a bit hot but ultimately it’s a solid, old-school Rioja.

Lealtanza 2001 Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$20
Roasted and leathery but not that bright. The palate is zesty and chock full of nondescript red fruit. The finish is similar, while overall that tannins are firm if a bit spiky. Imported by Quality Wines of Spain.

Lealtanza 2001 Reserva Selección Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$135
Grapy and granular smelling, with heavy, raw aromas that lack finesse and agility but offer plenty of thump. Surprisingly, the palate on this dark, more modern-styled wine is kind of tart, with racy cherry and blackberry fruit. Not an easy wine to evaluate; you want more from it but it isn’t that generous.
