Leaping Horse 2000 Merlot (Lodi)
Best Buy
Price
$5
Don’t be misled by the price, this is a good value. Ripe and rich, with pronounced berry flavors, dry and supple. Good tannins and a hit of acidity make it clean and refreshing. It’s not complex or ageable, but a nice mouthful at a super-value price.

Shows good varietal character, with black currant flavors, dry tannins and full body. Feels rough around the edges, but it’s not a bad glass of wine. Best Buy. —S.H.

For six bucks you get a dry, rich, creamy Chardonnay with nice flavors of pineapples, pears, apples and smoky vanilla. This is a great price for a wine of this polished appeal.

Leaping Horse 2005 Shiraz (Lodi)
Sometimes all you need is an inexpensive red like this one. This Lodi Syrah erupts in white pepper aromas and is tartly crisp in cherry and blackberry flavors.

A little disjointed, but plenty of varietal character in the apple, vanilla and peach flavors, and even some toasty oak. Dry and smooth. From Ironstone. —S.H.

Not bad for an everyday Chard at this price. You’ll be surprised by how much real varietal character there is, from the tangerine and apple flavors to the creamy, smoky texture to the spicy, clean finish.

Case production was 46,000 and every bottle will sell because it’s a good wine at a great price. Nothing terribly complicated, but dry, full-bodied and fruity.

Leaping Horse 2003 Shiraz (Lodi)

A little too soft in acids, and gooey in cassis and oak flavors, but this wine has good, rich tannins and a chocolaty taste on the finish.
