They pulled out their best for their birthday, and the result is a spectacular wine. Dense and concentrated in enormously complex cassis, black currant, cherry pie and cedar, it shows the dryness and firm tannins of a fine young Cabernet. Easy to predict a good lifetime ahead. Give it a year to resolve, and then should develop slowly for another six to eight years…

Lots of inky, jammy aromas of black fruit set up the red-fruit palate that is covered with a blanket of powerful oak. Not a light-hearted cuvée; rather it’s drying, concentrated and strong. With a few years of aging it could show additional subtleties.

Livingston Moffett 1999 Mitchell Vineyard Syrah (Napa Valley)

There’s plenty of sour herb on the even, dark fruit; soy, bouillon and leathery notes add real complexity. Medium-weight, with handsome fruit-acid balance, it’s slightly tart, a bit herbaceous, but also possesses fine structure and real potential to develop. Closes with tangy tannins, charcoal and pepper accents. Best held for three years.

Livingston Moffett 1999 Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

Very ripe tropical fruits and appealing pear, apple and spice notes show well in this nicely balanced wine. Good acidity plays a solid supporting role here. The toasty oak holds the almost overripe fruit in check—it’s strong from the mid palate through the handsome butter-and-apple finish.

This Syrah receives a split vote from the panel, its fans lauding the rich, jammy aromas and flavors of blackberry and spice, and its soft tealike tannins on the finish. Its detractors found a stalky note on the palate, but could still applaud the wine’s mouthfeel.

This wine’s performance wasn’t quite up to the winery’s other offering. Its flavor profile—caramel, black cherry, vanilla, mixed berries—left a sweet, confected taste in some reviewers’ mouths. Others still admired the wine’s lush but soft feel.
