Locati Cellars 2009 Pinot Grigio (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  1. $16
Estate grown and seeming to hint at some time in oak, this dry and lightly spicy wine features apple and pear fruit, already smooth and rounded and ready to drink. More in the style of Oregon Pinot Gris than Italian Pinot Grigio.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

Round, forward and fruity, this pleasant red does not scream out its varietal stamp, but it’s a perfectly fine quaffer, a bit tart and short in the finish.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Locati Cellars 2006 Barbera (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $26
A relatively soft entry, tart plum fruit, simple berry flavors and a hint of burnt toast. There is a slight burn also in the finish, that reflects the near-15% alcohol. A little chocolaty film wraps the tannins.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

Light fruit, with milk chocolate in the nose and on the palate, yields a simple wine with tangy acidity. It’s clean and fresh, but nondescript.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

Locati Cellars 2008 Barbera (Columbia Valley (WA))

Tart and tight, this young wine is still pulling itself together. The tart raspberry fruit turns quite sour, with a streak of Band-aid, then an unintegrated wash of caramel.  — P.G.  (12/15/2011)

Locati Cellars 2007 Innovation Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

Roughly half of this is Barbera, the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The Cab firms up the tannins, but the fruit lacks substance and depth, and the chocolaty oak does not add much interest.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

The scent of oak is all over this wine, though it is from neutral, not new, American barrels. Still it seems to over-ride the thin fruit, which hints at cherry candy and little else. The barrels also kick in a bit of spice, but there just isn’t much happening here. It’s simple, clean, and overpriced!  — P.G.  (9/1/2009)

Locati Cellars 2005 Sangiovese (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

This is the best of Locati’s three new releases, but not a lot different than the others. Light, tart, neutral and showing little ripeness, it’s got watermelon and strawberry flavors, lots of citric acid, and no depth.  — P.G.  (9/1/2009)
