Longboard 1999 Rochioli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Russian River Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
Cool-climate grapes from this famed vineyard yielded a tannic wine that shows enormous promise. Brims with peppery, cedar and cassis aromas and flavors. Bone-dry and austere now, but the solid core of chewy fruit suggests prime aging potential, reminiscent of a young Pauillac. The winemaker, Oded Shakked, is the longtime winemaker at J Wine Co.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Longboard 2001 Rochioli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Russian River Valley)

  1. $42
Another polished, succulent release from a vineyard that’s not supposed to be warm enough to ripen Cabernet. Of course, the vintage was very good, and this effort shows upfront blackcurrant and leather flavors, with a long, fruity finish. It’s generously oaked, and really excellent.  — S.H.  (11/15/2003)

Longboard 2007 Rochioli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Russian River Valley)

  1. $80
A bright, spicy Cabernet from this famous vineyard better known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Made from a small, older block of vines, it’s dry and appealing, with ripe cherry, blackberry, cedar, anise and pepper flavors. Drink now for freshness.  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Longboard 2003 Rochioli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Russian River Valley)

  1. $50
World-famous Rochioli doesn’t want to use their own Cabernet grapes, so they sell them to former J Wine Co. winemaker Oded Shakked, who carefully crafts this dry, full-bodied 100% Cabernet. It’s young, acidic and tannic, but with its polished core of cherries, should ease well into the next decade.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)
