This Merlot is strong and jammy in cherries and blackberries, with some herbs and spices for interest. It’s dry and crisp, a nice wine for drinking now.

With just a touch of oak providing creamy vanilla flavors, this wine’s real stars are the lemon, lime and tropical fruit flavors, which have such a pretty minerality. It’s a little sweet, but refreshing acidity balances that out.

A very good dessert wine, whose acidity provides balance to the sweet apricot, orange, vanilla and honeysuckle flavors. A bit of tease, it would score far higher with greater intensity.

This is a Syrah-Bordeaux blend, with a splash of Pinotage. It’s a rugged, rustic, appealing wine with some complex berry, cherry, leather, dark chocolate and spice flavors, and finishes bone dry and tannic. Good pasta wine.

A bit overripe in raisins, with a chocolate-currant core enriched with smoky new oak. But the texture is silky and fine, and the finish is dry and spicy. Drink now.

A cut of minty acidity makes this dry Merlot sharp in the mouth, giving the cherry and raspberry flavors a tart edge. Drink it now with a nice steak.

This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot and Malbec. The grapes are entirely from Sonoma County. It’s a tannic, lusty and ultimately satisfying wine, with jammy berry and spice flavors.

Owner/winemaker Oded Shakked was until recently the longtime winemaker at J Wine Co. Now he’s doing his own thing, and this is his personal vineyard, in prime Pinot Noir country along Westside Road. The wine is softly opulent in blueberry, blackberry and coffee flavors, with a melted chocolate richness balanced by rich, ripe tannins. Drink now.
