A tiny winery in the backwater burg of Mazama, Lost River is making some of the best, affordable boutique wines in Washington. Don’t look for a fancy label, but get a load of the fruit and style in the bottle. This is an elegant merlot showcase, a perfectly shaped expression of supple berry and cherry flavor, tart, vivid and racy. Lean, not mean; it’s a classic.

Lost River 2005 Syrah (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

Barrel scents of smoke and bacon fat cover blackberry fruit, and lead into a thick, toasty wine designed to win friends. It’s forward and bright, with pretty fruit flavors of strawberry, black cherry and more. The oak flavors are generous and lush, complementing the tart, acidic snap of the fruit.

Lost River 2005 Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

Full-bodied, ripe and round, this tangy Merlot is swathed in liquorous barrel flavors. It needs decanting to smooth out the alcoholic burn, and let the fruit emerge from the lumber yard. But it’s fine tasting, with a rich chocolaty finish, designed to please those who enjoy a California style red.
