Louis Barthélémy 1997 Brut Saphir Sparkling (Champagne)

Owned by the Chancel family (whose main holdings are in the Lubéron in southern France), this small Champagne house has made an exceptional 1997. It is now reaching maturity, with all its elements in balance, rich but satisfyingly dry, with toast and intense structure and acidity.  — R.V.  (12/1/2008)

Louis Barthélémy 1998 Brut Saphir 1.5 liters Sparkling (Champagne)

Just approaching toasty maturity, this is a rich and full wine, its white fruits and perfumes floating above yeast, cookie and pine nut flavors. It has a great mouthfeel, a tingling character, acidity and richness in harmony.  — R.V.  (12/1/2010)

Louis Barthélémy 2005 Brut Saphir Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $60
Full-bodied Champagne that feels rich with its pear and apricot juice flavors. It has weight, an apple skin texture and a soft, creamy aftertaste. It would be worth aging for a few more years.  — R.V.  (12/1/2011)

Louis Barthélémy NV Brut Rubis Rosé Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $45
Delicate rosé, both in color and in its attractive red fruit and apple flavors. The Champagne is balanced, its acidity and the soft dosage in great harmony. There is just a hint of bottle age to give extra complexity.  — R.V.  (12/1/2011)

Louis Barthélémy NV Pink Brut Sparkling (Champagne)

  • Online Exclusive
This is only just rosé, its onion skin color as pale as possible. The wine has some red fruit flavors, but it is more about toast, yeast and a lively, smooth finish. Worth considering with salamis or ham, as well as salmon.  — R.V.  (7/1/2009)

Louis Barthélémy NV Brut Améthyste Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $35
With some good bottle age, this is a dry, yeast- and toast- dominated Champagne. Crisp citrus and apple notes are there along with a steely edge. It’s a fine wine from a small Champagne house.  — R.V.  (12/1/2011)

Louis Barthélémy NV Opale Demi-Sec Sparkling (Champagne)

  • Online Exclusive
Almonds and toasted bread combine with lemon and honey flavors in this well-balanced off-dry wine. The acidity reminds you this is Champagne, while keeping fruit and softness right up front.  — R.V.  (12/1/2010)
