Louis Guntrum 2005 Niersteiner Rehbach Spätlese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $23
This wine pleases from start to finish, beginning with mouthwatering aromas of zesty limes and green apples and then adding plump, mouthfilling flavors of melon. Ends long, with pepper, spice and mineral notes.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Louis Guntrum 2006 Dry Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Rather full and round in the mouth—the combined effect of 12.5% alcohol and a touch (0.6%) of residual sugar—this nevertheless does taste pretty dry. It’s a minerally version, with smoky minerality and powdered—almost liquified—stone notes fleshed out by hints of tangerine and peach. Drink now.  — J.C.  (9/1/2007)

Louis Guntrum 2007 Kabinett Scheurebe (Rheinhessen)

  1. $14
The appealing nose of lemony-lime aromas features a hint of honey. This medium-sweet wine with a gripping crispness is fairly light-bodied and slightly loose-knit, but refreshing, with moderately intense flavors of citrus cocktail. A nice earthy kick chimes in on the finish.  — W.E.  (3/1/2011)

Louis Guntrum 2002 Oppenheimer Herrenberg Auslese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

This medium-bodied auslese has a rich, concentrated mouthfeel that perfectly suits its flavors of ripe apples, pears and melons. Some slate notes on the nose add interest, while the finish is firmer than you might expect, suggesting decent ageability. Try now or in five years.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

Louis Guntrum 2004 Oppenheimer Sackträger Spätlese Trocken Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $26
Although the aromas of this wine are largely neutral, showing just hints of apple and citrus, the flavors come alive on the palate, offering up ripe apple, lime, nectarine and spice notes. It’s slightly oily in texture, finishing softly tart, accented by dried spices.  — J.C.  (9/1/2007)

Louis Guntrum 2002 Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Auslese (Rheinhessen)

  1. $23
Bit of an odd nose, with hints of butter and volatility layered over dried apricots. Viscous texture in the mouth, where the wine seems to regather itself, featuring fine flavors of candied pineapple and dried spices. Picks up dieselly notes on the finish.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

  1. $28
Unique in character, this wine features powerful white pepper and spice drop notes layered over white peach and melon flavors. It’s rather big and round in the mouth, but it also has a bit of a hole in the midpalate. Turns peppery and spicy on the finish.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Louis Guntrum 2002 Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Spätlese Trocken (Rheinhessen)

  1. $19
Flint and mineral notes accent pineapple and lime aromas, while on the palate, the wine shows plenty of ripe, citrusy fruit flavors. Note that trocken wines can still have some residual sugar and this seems to have some, or perhaps it’s just the very ripe-tasting fruit. Tangy acids on the long finish provide balance.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)
