Lovingston 2008 Josie's Knoll Estate Reserve Red (Monticello)

  1. $19
Lush, ripe blueberries and plums meld into hints of dark chocolate and lavender on Lovingston Estate’s lovely Josie’s Knoll Estate Reserve. It seems a bit soft on entry, yet bright acidity and smooth, furry tannins give the black fruit palate substance and style.  — A.I.  (12/1/2011)

Lovingston 2007 Josie's Knoll Merlot (Monticello)

  1. $15
There’s an interesting counterplay between the bright and the dark in Lovingston’s hand-picked, small lot Josie’s Knoll. On the nose, black cherry preserves are countered with black pepper spice and char. On the palate, ripe, concentrated black fruit is layered with tar, earth and bramble. It’s elegant and seductive, but anchored by a core of gripping tannins.  — A.I.  (12/15/2010)

Lovingston 2010 Josie's Knoll Cabernet Franc (Monticello)

  1. $21
Dense and bold in fruit and cinnamon spice, a whopper of a wine from Virginia. Full bodied with richly extracted blueberry, blackberry, and dried fig flavors, it could use a few years to smooth out all the grippy tannins. Enjoy now with a good decanting.  — A.I.  (12/31/2011)

Lovingston 2008 Josie's Knoll Merlot (Monticello)

  1. $15
Intensely aromatic with notes of sweet pomegranate and fresh violets, Lovingston’s standard label Josie’s Knoll is soft and a tad sweet on entry with a ripe black cherry juice note. Hints of fresh herbs on the midpalate combine with grippy tannins on the finish, adding a dose of style and structure.  — A.I.  (12/1/2011)

Lovingston 2006 Josie's Knoll Reserve Merlot (Monticello)

  1. $19
A bit shy, but some air will help coax out aromas of vanilla and cherry jam. The palate has medium acid and the faintest whiff of tannins while some leather and horse notes come out on the short-to-medium finish. Well done in an easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing style.  — W.E.  (5/1/2010)

Lovingston 2009 Josie's Knoll Cabernet Franc (Monticello)

  1. $14
A pleasant mix of coffee grinds, char and spiced black cherries perfume this Cabernet Franc. Full bodied and rich with ripe black plum fruit and soft mocha and cinnamon notes, it’s faintly reminiscent of a mug of Mexican hot chocolate. Soft tannins and a vibrant acidity contribute to a tart, sour cherry finish.  — A.I.  (2/1/2011)

Lovingston 2005 Josie's Knoll Merlot (Monticello)

This is a pretty eastern U.S. Merlot, with its subtle, nuanced flavors of red berry, plum and currant and its approachable, soft tannins. Virginia is showing its talent for growing reds and this is a good example of what can be done with good vineyard management and winemaking.  — S.K.  (2/1/2008)

Lovingston 2007 Estate Reserve Josie's Knoll Red (Monticello)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
This Merlot-Cab Franc blend is a lovely mélange of sweet sour cherries and vanilla spice combined with scents of darkly toasted oak and barnyard. On the palate as well, soft, rich, red fruit melds into earthy barnyard and black pepper spice notes, backed by gripping grape tannins. There’s a hint of sweet tomato in the mid palate, but otherwise, a strong contender…  — A.I.  (2/1/2011)
