Luis Alegre 2004 Crianza Red (Rioja)

  1. $23
Opens with chocolate chip and mint aromas along with solid berry fruit. The palate is pure and firm, offering clean cherry and plum flavors backed by light new oak and chocolate. More like a comfortable pair of jeans than a fine suit, but there are plenty of occasions where that’s what you want. Imported by America Uncorked.  — M.S.  (12/15/2008)

Luis Alegre 2002 Vendimia Seleccionada Red (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $48
A mixture of baked fruit, bacon, asphalt and leather aromas is impressive, and so is the bright, composed palate and its flavors of plum, raspberry and tobacco. It’s crisp and zesty, which is probably reflective of the cool 2002 vintage, but still it’s a very nice wine with depth and dexterity. Drink now.  — M.S.  (8/1/2009)

Luis Alegre 2003 Gran Vino Pontac Red (Rioja)

  1. $70
Evidence of a warm vintage is sketched on the bouquet. Aromas of raisin, black licorice and mocha are quite sweet. The palate is wide and mildly tannic, with earthy, oaky black cherry and raspberry flavors. For a ripe wine with significant extraction, it’s well balanced. But all along there’s a hint of prune that tells you it’s ripe and ready.  — M.S.  (2/1/2009)

Luis Alegre 2006 Tinto Joven Red (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $16
Carbonic maceration gives this Rioja a candied, somewhat odd set of aromas and flavors. It is mildly cheesy and sweet on the nose, with powdered cinnamon poking through. In the mouth, it shows even more candied cherry and raspberry, but also red licorice. Nothing overly bad about it, but still it tastes and smells a bit artificial.  — M.S.  (4/1/2009)
