Luna 1999 Canto Red (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
Expensive, yes, but these guys know what theyÕre doing. This Super-Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon defines NapaÕs virtues: Complexity, deliciousness, and the softest, creamiest tannins, together with the modern penchant for low acidity and, of course, lots of new oak. This wine wows with opulence and impresses with elegance.  — S.H.  (9/1/2002)

Luna 2006 North Fork Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $110
Very dry and tannic, an austere young Cabernet that offering much relief now. You’ll find a very rich, concentrated core of blackberries and minerals, brightened by a scour of fine, clean acidity. The odds are heavily in favor of this wine aging well for a decade.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Luna 2004 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $100
The difference from Luna’s regular ’04 Cab is in the increased alcohol, nearly 1% higher, and greater tannic structure. There’s probably more new oak, too, which is in proportion to the massive blackcurrant and cherry fruit. As young as it is, it’s fully drinkable now, but should hold and improve for six to eight years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Luna 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $80
A nice, rich Cab that shows off its Napa pedigree. It’s a little soft and not an ager, but lush in black currant, blackberry tart, cherry pie, chocolate, vanilla, smoky oak and spice flavors that are delicious. The tannins are thick, but so ripe and sweet, you can drink it right now.  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Luna 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
Dry as dust and very tannic, this Cabernet simply isn’t ready for prime time yet. It’s tightly wound and tough, and resists breaking down. But there are plenty of blackberries tucked deep inside. Hold this elegant wine until after 2015.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Luna 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
Luna is establishing a great track record with their Cab. This ’06 is rich and complex, with flavors of black currants, black cherry pie and mocha. Beyond the flavor is a dry structure governed by finely grained tannins.  — S.H.  (2/1/2009)

Luna 2000 Sangiovese (Napa Valley)

  1. $18
Pretty much as good as California Sangiovese gets, combining Pinot Noir’s soft, supple tannins and Merlot’s full-bodied fruit. Very ripe and spicy, with black raspberry flavors, it’s dry, with crisp acidity. This is a gentle but firm wine that will go well with a wide variety of foods.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Dry and tough in tannins, yet impressive for balance and integrity. Shows currant, blackberry and smoky flavors, with a firm minerality. One of the better, more elegant Sangioveses out there.  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)
