Lustau NV Almacenista Palo Cortado de Jerez Sherry (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $42
A beautiful style of elevated Sherry that’s worth every cent if fine Sherry is to your liking. The nose is pure toffee, roasted nuts, apricot and mellow quince, while the key flavor is dried orange and the nuances hinted at by the aromas all reappear. Muscular but in perfect shape, with a finish as smooth as glass.  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Lustau NV Emperatriz Eugenia Very Rare Oloroso Sherry (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Fans of fine Sherry are the target market for this excellent, ethereal oloroso. The nose is clean and mild, with citrus, nuts and flower blossom. There’s nothing pushy or heavy about it; in fact, it’s so refined and layered that you don’t notice anything but the wine’s lovely buttery notes, toffee and coffee. Very demure and pure.  — M.S.  (2/1/2009)

Lustau NV San Emilio Pedro Ximénez Sherry (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $33
With piercing aromas of raisin pudding, molasses and spice, this rolls out the welcome mat and more. Luscious is probably as tame as you can put it; this is a ribald sweet wine with acidic backbone and hugely intense flavors of baked brown sugar, cinnamon cake and molasses. Powerful but still racy due to bracing acidity. About as good as it gets with P.X.  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Lustau NV Almacenista Amontillado del Puerto Sherry (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $42
Extremely smooth and inviting from the beginning through the midsection and onto the finish. Toffee and warm cobbler aromas start it off and lead to a textured, elegant palate with toasty, nutty flavors and a pinch of salt. The finish is robust, and at all points it’s a take-charge wine. An amontillado for connoisseurs and anyone eager to enjoy the finer points of…  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Lustau NV Almacenista Oloroso Pata de Gallina Sherry (Jerez)

  1. $42
Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of a bigger painting that includes coffee, bitter chocolate and baked fruits. Warming and charming, with subtle acidity. Very elegant and refined.  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Lustau NV Almacenista Fino del Puerto Sherry (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $27
Immediately this strikes you as being elegant and refined. The nose is perfectly round, with oily, semi-rich aromas of baked fruits and almonds. The palate has more fruit and intensity than 99% of the finos out there, but there’s also a backdrop of nut, mushroom and dried apple that stands out before exploding in front of a smooth, stately finish.  — M.S.  (6/1/2009)

Lustau NV Dry Oloroso Don Nuño Sherry (Jerez)

Opens with a wonderful set of nutty, dry aromas along with pit fruits like nectarine, apricot and peach. The palate is a cacaphony of toasty, peppery flavors sweetened by caramel and brown sugar. It has a fine feel and balance, and then finishing notes of browned butter and sautéed mushroom. Delicious oloroso.  — M.S.  (2/1/2009)

Lustau NV DeLuxe Cream Capataz Andrés Sherry (Jerez)

  1. $20
Attractive caramel, apricot and peach aromas drive straight to a pure, creamy palate of cinnamon apple, mocha, coffee and chocolate. It’s quite smooth and balanced, and very long on the finish. Avoids all the pitfalls of sweet Sherry by maintaining its balance and mouthfeel.  — M.S.  (12/15/2009)
