Madrigal 2001 Petite Sirah (Napa Valley)

Starts off with rich aromas that are redolent of chocolate, coffee and black cherry. On the palate, it’s firm textured, framed in ripe tannins that highlight more cassis, earth, spice and complex herb flavors. Bright and long on the finish, this is a big, beautiful wine.

Madrigal 2008 Las Vinas del Señor Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Pricey, yes, but Madrigal pulled out all the stops on this flashy wine, making it their best Cabernet ever. It’s a big, tannic and dry wine, stuffed with blackberry, currant and oak flavors. Voluptuous and dramatic, but it needs age, possibly a lot. Give it a rest until 2015 and see how it’s doing then.

This is one of those Petite Sirahs that will benefit from a little time in the cellar. Even though it’s made in the modern style, with softer, sweeter tannins than the variety has shown the past, it’s still a bruiser. Yet with a gigantic core of blackberries, blueberries and chocolate, it should negotiate the next 5–6 years easily.

Madrigal 2005 Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

This is a beautiful Zinfandel. It exhibits all the wild, exotic forest berry-cherry flavors you could want, flooded with briary spices and notes of currants and mint that go on forever in the finish. Yet it also has Napa’s perfect tannins and the balance of a fine Cabernet Sauvignon. First-class Zin, a chef’s dream to play with.

A deep purple hue foreshadows the ripe, rich flavors in this wine. Jammy blackberry, cassis, herb, licorice and spice all blend nicely. They are framed in supple, firm tannins and backed by a tangy finish.

Madrigal 2004 Sonnet #63 Red (Napa Valley)

There’s a good wine in here that wants to get out, but it will take some time. Even though this Bordeaux blend is more than four years old, it’s still stiff in tannins, with a dry, withering mouthfeel. But there’s a solid core of black currants. Give it until 2010, at least.

Sleek and smooth textured, this fleshy, velvety wine is packed with lovely plum, black cherry, cedar, herb, spice and chocolate flavors. It’s lush, long and rich, yet offers a good measure of finesse and elegance. Not over the top, just terrific.
