Fragrant and very well-balanced, this opens with a grapefruit, grass and mild tropical fruit nose. It’s even and full on the tongue, with a ripe melon-spice palate. The long, smooth finish has a melony feel and tangerine hints. Shows fine Sauvignon Blanc character and avoids edgy, exaggerated herbaceousness. Best Buy. —M.M.

Berry, rhubarb and cocoa show on this flavorful red’s deep nose. It’s even and lithe in feel, with substantial tart berry flavors offset by more cocoa notes and earthy accents. As in their Sauvignon Blanc, Malan displays a deft winemaking touch, allowing the handsome depth of fruit to shine, showing good extraction and balance. Drink now through 2004. Best Buy. —M.M.

This wine is produced by the Malan family of Simonsig Estate from purchased grapes. Light, fresh, with crisp, green fruit, it is an easy, pleasant wine to drink, well-made and delicious. There’s a lovely, creamy, toffee aftertaste. Best Buy.
