Margan 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Hunter Valley)
Price
$17
This Cab seems narrow and kind of mainstream at first, but really blooms after a few minutes in the glass. Has menthol and carob accents on the nose, with a sweet-plum core of flavor. Blankets the tongue with textured tannins. Imported by Southern Starz, Inc.

Margan 2005 Saignée Rosé Shiraz (Hunter Valley)
Price
$15
One of the better Oz rosés I’ve had lately. It’s fairly dark in color, with deep black cherry and raspberry flavors and aromas. It’s medium-full in size, with a dry, minerally feel. Perfect for those warm days that you spend on the deck grilling up a storm. Imported by Southern Starz, Inc.

Floral aromas—particularly honeysuckle—are complemented by sweet peaches and pears. But it’s not all about fruit, there’s a minerally streak of lime or chalk that runs through the flavors. A laser-like beam of lemony acidity offsets a rich, thick mouthfeel.

Margan 2009 Sémillon (Hunter Valley)
Price
$18
With a flinty edge to its lemon-lime aromas and an indescribable stone-dust component to its flavors, this is an intriguing medium-bodied Semillon that finishes with laser-like precision. Drink now–2020, by which time it will have developed honey and toast characters.

Margan 2003 Merlot (Hunter Valley)
Price
$17
I like this wine for what it isn’t—brash or sweet. Tannins are smooth and manageable, with mushroom and stable notes accenting firm plum and cherry flavors. A little soft on the palate, with a bite of herb at the finish, but it’s nearly as enjoyable as the winery’s excellent Cabernet. Imported by Southern Starz, Inc.

Margan 2000 Sémillon (Hunter Valley)

This is a lush, immediately approachable style of Sémillon, one that puts the focus on vanilla, cream and smoke aromas and sweet peach flavors, yet still finishes lemony and long. Drink now. Best Buy.

Margan 2003 Shiraz (Hunter Valley)
Price
$19
Clove, peppermint and chocolate constitute the bouquet of this medium-bodied Shiraz. Plum, chocolate and spice flavors finish with slightly chalky tannins, but there’s enough fruit for balance. Drink now with rare beef, or hold 2-3 years.
