The first sniff and taste tell you this is an important wine, but also a very young, tannic one. It’s the structure, and not just the ripe flavors, that’s so impeccable, giving the wine its backbone and strength. But speaking of flavors, the wine is gigantic in black currants and blackberries. Amazingly dense and direct, offering an explosion of fruit in the mouth. Like an orchard, with massive blackberries, cherries, currants, spiced plums and cola, liberally enhanced with sweet, smoky oak. The tannins are bigtime but refined. It’s a wine that screams quality, but is too impetuous to appreciate now. Needs a good 4–6 years in the cellar, probably longer.
