There’s lots to like in this fully mature Rioja. Substantial ripe sweet fruit, caramel and tobacco aromas and flavors abound. Classic old-school Gran Reserva. The nose is full of barbecue, molasses and dried plum, while the palate has complexities in the form of tobacco, tire rubber and earth. It goes somewhat citrusy and quick on the finish, ending in a wash of orange-infused leather and chocolate. Drink now or hold for another 5 years.

Nicely done, a touch soft, but strong as a whole. The nose shows some typical Arienzo earth and stewiness, while the balanced palate is meaty but fresh enough, with good berry fruit resting on a bed of firm tannins and proper acids. Not a complicated wine; it’s classic Rioja.

A little baked and flat smelling, with licorice and stewed fruit aromas. Sounds kind of dark and heavy, right? But the palate runs to the thin side, with lean but pure raspberry and cherry flavors. Vitality and snap are its virtues; not much depth or character are its fallbacks.

The bouquet is mostly sweet and fresh, with just the slightest hint of field greens. Adequate strawberry and raspberry fruit carries the palate toward a rubbery, spicy finish that brings pepper at the end. Easy and lean, with a good enough mouthfeel.

A bit soupy and murky at first, and like almost every Arienzo wine previously tasted, there’s tree bark, earth and leather to the nose. The palate has a good feel to it, while the flavors are of tea and herbal berry fruit. In addition, dill, coconut, vanilla and resin all make short appearances on the finish.
