Marqués de Cáceres 2009 MC Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$33
Layered, stout and pure smelling, with aromas of cola, chocolate and modern, ripe berry fruit that roll out the welcome mat. Feels full and tannic, with toasty black fruit flavors accented by espresso and bitter chocolate. Finishes dark, with coffee and licorice flavors. Best from late 2012 through 2015.

Marqués de Cáceres 2001 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)
Editors' Choice
Price
$35
Might this be the best wine Marqués de Cáceres has produced? The vintage is one of Spain’s greatest, and gran reserva is supposed to be Rioja in its loftiest form. So indulge in this beauty’s rock-solid structure, lovely violet and raspberry aromas, and long, stout finish. Best from 2012–2018.

Marqués de Cáceres 2008 MC Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$46
Rock solid and dense, with aromas of black cherry and cassis along with a whiff of aged cheese. The palate is tight, tannic and rubbery, with grabby black cherry and blackberry flavors along with toasty, dark shadings. Finishes firm, with a touch of black olive and herbs. The best MC to date; drink now through 2017.

Marqués de Cáceres 2004 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$35
Sweet berry aromas offer touches of marzipan and leather. The palate is ripe, vibrant and grabby, with full tannins framing plum and berry flavors along with accents of tobacco and earth. Lightly oaky on the finish, with a vanilla note and dryness. Shows good weight and clarity; Drink now through 2015.

Marqués de Cáceres 1994 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

Price
$25
One of the big differences between Cáceres and its competitors is a reliance on French rather than American oak. This gran reserva spent more than two years in barrel, and it shows wonderful leather, vanilla and tobacco shadings layered over red plum fruit. A fully mature Rioja that offers good value.

Marqués de Cáceres 2000 Gaudium Gran Vino Red (Rioja)
Price
$50
This winery’s flagship red is Tempranillo-based and it delivers round, blackberry, herb, tobacco and earth-based aromas. It’s fairly creamy in the mouth, with generous flavors that hit the berry and plum chords and the descent into a deep finish of vanilla, oak and herbs. Not a cookie-cutter red; doesn’t taste run-of-the-mill. Good through 2011.

Marqués de Cáceres 2001 Reserva Red (Rioja)
Price
$25
Plump and ripe in style, with a lot of charm to its personality. This is very nice and simple Tempranillo (with 15% Garnacha and Graciano), and it’s ready to drink now. The feel is on the flush side, and there’s jamminess to the palate along with light pickle notes and vanilla on the finish. Coming along nicely; this review reflects an improvement over a tasting…

Marqués de Cáceres 2004 Gaudium Red (Rioja)
Price
$64
Jammy and sweet smelling, with intensity and a lot of ripeness. Throughout it teeters on the precipice of being overripe, but amid the chunky darkness and sweetness there’s tasty berry, chocolate and spice. Finishes a bit pruney and raisiny, so get at it as soon as you can.
