Marques de Griñon 2004 Syrah (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
There are more similarities than differences among the Griñon varietal roster, but a favorite has to be this dense and meaty Syrah. While not the most sauvage or iconoclastic Syrah on the market, it excels with a delicious plum and berry palate and searing intensity. It’s all fruit and power, but in that style it’s quite something.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2003 Emeritus Red (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $75
Hiding behind Griñon’s impressive 2004s is this ultrapremium blend of Cabernet, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Emeritus is sweet and ripe with pipe tobacco, cassis, spice cake and chocolate aromas. It’s immense and inviting, with grabby, plump blackberry fruit along with cinnamon, mocha and cola notes. Creamy, rich and almost unctuous. Drink over the next five years. 200…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2002 Syrah (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $40
Dark and ethereal, with raisin and vanilla on the pitch-black, manly bouquet. One of Spain’s best Syrahs, with dense cherry, raspberry and mocha flavors. It’s lavishly oaked, smooth yet big, and it’s packed to the brim with full tannins and lushness. Drink now or hold. Imported by Moët Hennessy USA.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Marques de Griñon 2002 Petit Verdot (Dominio de Valdepusa)

Marques de Griñon 2004 Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $45
Certain past vintages of this La Mancha Cabernet have been a little green and lacking. But in 2004 the wine is ripe and Californian in style. It smells of spice cake, berry jam and cassis, while the palate is grabby and mildly tannic, with molten black-fruit flavors. Finishes a bit medicinal and sweet.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2004 Estate Bottled Petit Verdot (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  1. $45
The winery spells it Petite Verdot, and the wine shows tight aromas of black fruits, leather and mushroom. The palate is deep and very ripe, with full-force blueberry and blackberry flavors. A little edgy and tannic, but immensely ripe and pleasant, just like all the Marqués de Griñon 2004s. Good now and better in 2009–10.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2002 Emeritus Red (Dominio de Valdepusa)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $90
Dark and definitely not reserved, this is a big blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot that pours on the rich blackberry, cola, chocolate and smoke character. A lot of powerful new oak backs it all up, leaving espresso bitterness and mocha sweetness on the finish. A modern wine with ample lushness.  — M.S.  (2/1/2008)

Marques de Griñon 2000 Emeritus Red (Vino da Mesa de Toledo)

  1. $60
As you might expect from a wine from Spain’s central plains, this is dark, stewy and heavy. But it’s also loaded with exotic gumdrop, spice and plum syrup aromas, saturated deep-fruit flavors, and ultimately an ending flow of coffee and fudge. It’s like drinking a confection, but one crafted for adults.  — M.S.  (3/1/2005)
