Juicy blackberry and plum flavors have just enough of a charred-oak overlay to keep the fruit from being too jammy. A sleek and sophisticated Cab-Merlot blend, it’s mouthfilling and smooth, with brambly, lush blackberry aromas wafting from the nose. Aged in new French oak for 18 months; 29,900 bottles made. This smooth, stylish wine is on the way up, as evidenced by the two-point bump it’s receiving from its last review, in December 2004. Today it’s round and full, with aromas of hay and popcorn that draw you in. Layered through the middle, with expressive white fruit, dryness and sweetness all in one. Take a whiff and it comes across plump and traditional. The palate is less complex and toasty; grapefruit and other citrus flavors are what you get. The finish is smooth and unassuming. It’s a lively type of wine, one that’s neither brooding nor subdued. Best Buy. —M.S.

Surely one of the better bargains this year, and with 60,000 cases produced, it can’t be that hard to find. This Cab-Tempranillo is full and balanced in the mouth, with red fruit and a healthy dose of oak. Its tannins are most perceptible on the finish; letting it rest a year or two may coax more than mocha and light, jammy fruit out of the nose. Best Buy. —D.M.

Notes of scrambled eggs, apple and melon create a yeasty, full bouquet. Flavors of lime and kiwi are clean and exact, while the finish is moderately long and nuanced with hints of smoke and slate. Very nice on the palate, with good bead.

Light, airy and dusty on the nose, with apple and melon along with a touch of yeast. The palate is plump and healthy, with a good bead, nice acids and cidery, lightly briney apple and green fruit flavors. Shows some complexity beyond what’s normal for Cava.

Red plum and cherry fruit isn’t overblown or jammy, by any means. On the contrary, there’s an element of plum-skin tautness that keeps the wine a little austere, in terms of flavor. Medium-bodied and somewhat chewy, it closes with woodsy tannins and more plum fruit. A steal, for the price. 32,000 cases produced. Best Buy. —D.M.

Light apple and spice aromas are simple, straightforward and appealing. The palate shows good balance, freshness and tasty flavors of candied pineapple and orange. Finishes juicy and correct.
