Martín Berdugo 2008 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
After it oozes rubber and bacon on the nose, berry fruit and mild medicinal aromas settle in. Feels full, tight and structured, with meat, black cherry and wild berry flavors. Finishes warm, chocolaty and lightly roasted. Well-made, and impressive for the price.  — M.S.  (5/1/2012)

Martín Berdugo 2006 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $34
Deep aromas of mint, raisin, Christmas spice and hickory reflect ripeness and 24 months in barrel. The palate has a choppy feel due to firm acidity and tannins, while the flavors are roasted and leathery but also suggest earthy fruit. Not a sweet, modern wine; it’s more meaty and savory. Drink now through 2015.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Martín Berdugo 2009 Joven Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $13
Sweet and young on the bouquet, with fresh and easy plum and blueberry aromas. The palate is chunky but clean, with bright, candied berry flavors and a touch of dark molasses on the sweet finish. Not bashful; juicy, bright and flavorful.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Martín Berdugo 2006 Crianza Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $30
Somewhat reduced and granular on the bouquet, where raisin enters the picture along with coffee and chocolate aromas. A big wine with muscular tannins and a vise grip. Black olive, black cherry and plum flavors set up a tannic, tight finish. Should improve with another year or so of aging.  — M.S.  (12/15/2009)

Martín Berdugo 2009 Barrica Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $16
Clean and penetrating on the nose, with leather and warm berry/cherry aromas. Comes across bright and lively, with good balance and an appealing, easygoing set of wild berry and spice flavors. Shows length and follow-through on the finish. Very good for affordable RDD.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Martín Berdugo 2005 Barrica Red (Ribera del Duero)

Opens with candied berry and salinic aromas. It’s tough in its youth and also a little too funky to inspire much confidence for the future. Toughness in tannins; toughness in fruit; quite peppery on the finish. It just isn’t that inviting.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Martín Berdugo 2006 Joven Red (Ribera del Duero)

A bit funky and gassy on the nose, and while the wine offers ripeness and sweetness on the palate, there’s always a little something strange and sulfuric lingering. It has its plum and acidity, but the tannins and overall mouthfeel are grabby.  — M.S.  (10/1/2008)
