Martin Ray

While it has changed hands numerous times over the last 130 years, the site of Martin Ray Winery is the oldest in continuous operation in Sonoma County. In 1990, Martin Ray Vineyards was purchased by winemaker Courtney Benham whose mission is was to “produce wines whose quality would make Martin Ray himself proud”. In 2003, he acquired the old Martini & Prati Winery which is now the home to the Martin Ray Winery and Tasting Room. There are thirty 11,000 gallon redwood tanks that date back to the early 1900s when the Martini family owned the winery. These tanks are now used to hold Martin Ray wines and have become quite the spectacle during the winery tour. Martin Ray is also responsible for the Angeline line of wines which includes a Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. While Martin Ray produces Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir, it is their Cabernet Sauvignon that is most impressive according to our Martin Ray wine ratings. Their prime vineyards are located in the Diamond Mountain District and the Stag’s Leap District garnishing some of the best fruit for their top tier reserve Cabs. For a full compilation of all our rated Martin Ray wines be sure to check out our Martin Ray reviews.

Martin Ray 2005 Angeline Riesling (Mendocino County)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
This is one of the more interesting Rieslings out there, and that’s because it’s very dry, like an Alsatian Riesling. It has crisp acidity and a steely, minerally undertone to the tart green apple, peach and spice flavors. Very nice, versatile at the table, a real sommelier’s wine.  — S.H.  (11/15/2006)

Martin Ray 2005 Angeline Gewürztraminer (Mendocino County)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
Not from Anderson Valley, but from warmer inland vineyards. This pleasant Gewürz is sprightly in acidity with exotic passion fruit, Asian pear, kumquat, citrus and honeysuckle flavors, and a finish of powdered, dusty Asian spice. If you haven’t had a great California Gewürz in a while, try this one.  — S.H.  (11/15/2006)

Martin Ray 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  1. $45
Pretty sharp in tannins and acids, even for a Stags Leap Cab. Although it has plenty of blackberry, cherry, currant and oak flavors, it’s a hard wine. The palate finds so much to like, it wants it to be softer, but it’s not, so the gamble is on aging. Try after 2013.  — S.H.  (9/1/2010)

Martin Ray 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa-Mendocino-Sonoma)

  1. $20
Martin Ray has done a great job combining vineyards from multiple counties to produce this supple, polished, affordable Cabernet Sauvignon. With some Merlot and Cab Franc for complexity, it has flavors of black currants, cherries and smoky oak, and is fully ready to drink now.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)

Martin Ray 2008 Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County)

This is a big, rich and flavorful Pinot Noir. It’s brimming with cherries, pomegranates, rhubarbs, red licorice and sandalwood, with a spicy, meaty taste of bacon. Drink now.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)

Martin Ray 2006 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)

  1. $20
Finally, a completely dry, tart young wine that’s loaded with fruit, but is neither candy-sweet nor cat-pee unripe. Floods the mouth with spearmint, pineapple and vanilla flavors that finish long, clean and spicy.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Martin Ray 2010 Unoaked Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  1. $19
One of the best unoaked Chardonnays out there. So brilliantly ripe and pure in pineapples, tangerines, green apples and peaches, you won’t miss the oak at all. With crisp acidity, it’s a wonderful wine to drink with shellfish.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)
