Martinez Bujanda 1999 Conde de Valdemar - Reserva Garnacha (Rioja)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
There’s a hint of peanutiness to the aromas, along with black cherry, clove and allspice. Chocolate and black pepper sneak in on the palate, where the wine is big-boned without being overly rich or lush. In short, it’s well balanced.  — W.E.  (11/1/2003)

Martinez Bujanda 1999 Finca Valpiedra Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $32
A stand-alone project from Martínez-Bujanda that is spicy, leafy and not unlike good Bordeaux. The wine is a Tempranillo-dominated blend that includes some Cabernet. It has herbal, leafy aromas along with cherry and vanilla, and then zest, acidity and tannin on the palate. Well made and ready for the dinner table.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)

Martinez Bujanda 2004 Finca Valpiedra Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $40
Red fruit is the dominant player on both the raspberry-driven bouquet and the currant- and cherry-laced palate. In the mouth there’s integrity, natural acidity and restrained oak as opposed to heft and unnecessary burnt coffee and chocolate notes. Very clean and well made wine with aging potential. Good upon release and will hold through 2015.  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

Martinez Bujanda 1994 Conde de Valdemar - Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $21
A flavorful, mature wine from a respected vintage, in the classic Conde de Valdemar manner, a refined, perhaps more Pinot Noir-like style of Tempranillo. Handsome dried berry fruit and a cedary sweetness mark the wine throughout. It’s lithe and elegant, with an almost delicate sense of balance. Has the elements of a much more expensive aged red Burgundy. Best now…  — M.M.  (9/1/2002)

Martinez Bujanda 1996 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $22
A reasonably priced gran reserva from a good vintage, this ’96 is plump, supple and ready to drink. Thirty months in American oak has imparted plenty of charred and smoky aromas to the meat- and berry-infused flavors. Finishes long, with some lemony acid that would work well with pork roasts.  — W.E.  (11/1/2003)

Martinez Bujanda 1997 Finca Valpiedra Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $30
Fully mature and in need of current consumption, this wine reflects the difficulty of the vintage in its slightly green aromas and flavors. Finishes tart and cranberryish, with notes of coffee and earth.  — W.E.  (11/1/2003)

Martinez Bujanda 1998 Conde de Valdemar - Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $15
The fruit in this wine is a little thin, but you can’t help but be seduced by the pretty oak shadings of sweet vanilla, clove and cinnamon. Just enough berry fruit comes through to carry the flavors on the finish.  — W.E.  (11/1/2003)
