Martinsancho 2003 Verdejo (Rueda)
Best Buy
Price
$14
Heavily aromatic, with strong scents of nettles, citrus and mineral. This is a big-boned white, the product of a hot summer. It oozes pear and peach flavors prior to a smooth apple-coated finish. All in all, there’s a nice medley of activity, with good acids to push everything forward.

Martinsancho 2009 Verdejo (Rueda)
Price
$18
Citrusy and full on the nose, with a fleshy palate that sports fresh white grapefruit and passion fruit flavors. This is a textbook Verdejo from Rueda with modest sweaty notes, grapefruit galore, citrus pith and minerality. Drink now.

Martinsancho 2010 Verdejo (Rueda)
Online Exclusive
Price
$18
Simple, clean, mostly neutral aromas of citrus and orange blossom lead to an acidic, minerally palate with green citrus flavors. For Verdejo this is standard and good, with grapefruit on the finish. Juicy and easy to sip.

Martinsancho 2005 Verdejo (Rueda)
Price
$15
Plump, melony and ripe on the nose, with creamy pear, melon and banana flavors. Normally this wine is more racy and acidic than this, but the ’05 seems tropical relative to previous years. Still, it’s a good wine that will go down nicely if properly chilled. Drink now.

Martinsancho 2004 Verdejo (Rueda)
Price
$15
Crisp and green on the nose, with aromas of celery, green pepper and passion fruit. Tight and juicy across the palate, with peach and lime flavors. Dry as a soda cracker on the finish, yet firm and food friendly. Imported by Classical Wines.

Martinsancho 2002 Verdejo (Rueda)
Price
$12
Sharp and siren-like in the nose, with snappy green pepper and passion fruit aromas. Based on the bouquet, you’d think it Sauvignon Blanc. And the peppery, grapefruit palate wouldn’t steer you away from that perception. It’s not spritzy, but almost so. A real live-wire act.

Martinsancho 2006 Verdejo (Rueda)
Online Exclusive
Price
$16
Rueda is best when it’s fresh and dancing, but this 2006 is showing too many signs of the hot year from which it came. It’s already tired and soft, with compost and mealy citrus aromas going head to head with grapefruit and marmalade notes. Tasted in December 2007, this was probably a tastier, fresher wine six months prior.

Martinsancho 2000 Rueda Superior Verdejo (Rueda)
Price
$13
Smoothly textured with a hint of viscosity, this shows typical apple and hay flavors. Consistent from nose to close, there’s nothing wrong here, but it lacks the liveliness a vibrant young Verdejo can show. Drink now. —M.M.
