Mas de la Dame 2004 Coin Caché Rouge Grenache (Les Baux de Provence)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $36
Rich and ripe—nearly over the top in ripeness—this is a luscious blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah matured in old foudres. Without any appreciable oak, what shines are the superripe Grenache flavors of black cherries and cola and the soft, plush tannins. A concentrated, long finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2005 Le Vallon des Amants Red (Les Baux de Provence)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $37
Completely different in style from the estate’s Coin Caché rouge, this is primarily Mourvèdre, and primarily aged in new oak. Despite the oak, the fruit shines through, offering up ripe, mouthfilling flavors of blackberry, cola, coffee and spice. Firmly structured, this could repay 5–7 years of cellaring.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2004 Réserve du Mas Red (Les Baux de Provence)

  1. $22
A blend of approximately one-third each Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine sees only 20% new oak, so the wood is deep in the background. Instead, plum and cassis, licorice and mint take hold of the senses; the tannins are rich but ripe, giving the wine texture and length on the finish. Drink now– 2014.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2007 La Stèle Blanc Rolle (Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence)

  1. $22
Despite showing plenty of richness on the palate, this blend of 80% Rolle and 20% Clairette also shows ample freshness and acidity. Apricot, almond and melon flavors are broad yet focused, folding in citrusy notes on the long finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2005 Coin Caché Blanc White (Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence)

  1. $34
The bulk of this luxury-cuvée white is fermented in new oak, and the barrel influence is obvious: toasty and nutty aromas and flavors dominate, although hints of melon, fig and orange provide body and nuance. It’s a big, mouthfilling white, lusty and a bit warm on the finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2006 La Gourmande Grenache-Shiraz (Les Baux de Provence)

  1. $15
This blend of Grenache and Syrah is Mas de la Dame’s entry-level red, and it’s a nice way to start. Ripe black cherry aromas and touches of spice greet the nose, adding plum and licorice flavors on the palate. There’s plenty of heft, but the tannins are soft, making this approachable now.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2003 La Stèle Rouge Syrah-Cabernet (Les Baux de Provence)

  1. $24
This is a robust, dense wine, showing the hot character of the vintage in its aromas and flavors of fruitcake and spice and slightly rough texture. It’s a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Cabernet, matured in one-third new oak.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Mas de la Dame 2007 Rosé du Mas (Les Baux de Provence)

  1. $15
Slightly confected on the nose, showing cotton candy and bubble gum aromas, but you’ll also find plenty of strawberry-raspberry flavors. Very fruity and clean, with a fresh finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)
