Mas del Périé 2008 La Pièce Malbec (Cahors)

  1. $85
This is the top wine from Fabien Jouves’s estate. There is some new wood aging here and it shows in the polished edges of the very firm tannins. Burnt coffee and plum skin flavors add to the considerable power, the fruit just beginning to push through the tannins. Age for several more years.  — R.V.  (3/1/2012)

How good to find a powerful wine like this with reasonable alcohol. For this is an impressively dense and concentrated wine from 50-year-old vines. The fruit is ripe, juicy and chunky to go with the polished wood. A wine for cellaring.  — R.V.  (9/1/2010)

Mas del Périé 2009 La Roque Malbec (Cahors)

With the richness of the vintage in mind, this wine makes a powerfully extravagant statement. There is nothing subdued about the concentrated tannins or the intensely rich black fruits. Even with 3–4 years aging, this will still be a bold wine.  — R.V.  (3/1/2012)

Mas del Périé 2007 Les Acacias Malbec (Cahors)

  1. $40
Almost black in color, this shows the firm and tannic side of Malbec. The wood-aged wine balances well between spicy toast and dense fruits. The structure has a mineral character, promising some aging over 3–4 years or more.  — R.V.  (9/1/2010)

Rich, firm, opulent and impressive. With this vintage, the wood element seems to have tamed and integrated, leaving an attractive edge of chocolate and coffee.  — R.V.  (3/1/2011)

Burnt toast aromas show the youth of this wine. Their tannins dominate, giving a bitter chocolate and coffee character. The fruit is still lost here and needs 3–4 years to come out. An impressive wine for the future.  — R.V.  (3/1/2012)

Mas del Périé 2007 La Roque Malbec (Cahors)

The 18 months’ barrel aging has given a strong toasty wood taste that smothers the black plum fruits. Six months could see better integration, but the juiciness is missing in the bone-dry tannins.  — R.V.  (9/1/2010)
