Matarromera 2005 Prestigio Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $70
Deep and dark, with cola, blackberry and mossy aromas. This is full-bodied, tight and tannic, with hardness that will only be tempered by food and/or more time in bottle. Tastes bold, chunky and ripe, with chocolate and licorice along with heat and tannic fire. Drink now through 2017.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Matarromera 1999 Crianza Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
If you want a forward, intense wine with unbridled power and dynamite fruit, this is it. At first it might seem wild, almost out of whack. But once it unfolds there are cherry, coffee and herbal subtleties. The finish is a mile long and the potency and young acids make it almost citric. This is Crianza, oaked but not overdone, that bursts with vibrancy.  — M.S.  (3/1/2004)

Matarromera 1998 Reserva Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $49
Sweet aromas hint of grassy meadows and cherry cola. The palate is open and ripe, but there’s also a firm, tannic foundation to support all the ripe flavors. Time in the cellar should permit this powerhouse to shed some of its tannins. Hold for another year or so.  — M.S.  (3/1/2004)

Big and dark, with firm black cherry and blackberry aromas. Offers size, structure and crispness in the mouth, with driving, muscled flavors of cherry, black plum and integrated oak. Spicy and dry on the back end, with more than a hint of vanilla.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Matarromera 2006 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $27
Ripe, stout and concentrated on the bouquet, with cassis and lightly roasted berry aromas. Solid and tannic in the mouth, with full plum and cherry flavors. Finishes big and friendly, with a very mild herbal undertone and a slight dose of sauciness. Very nice RDD.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Matarromera 2007 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $29
Rooty smelling, with cola, sarsparilla, spiced meats and leafy berry aromas. The palate is plump and soft but healthy, with round, sweet berry fruit flavors and ample spice. A generous wine that’s hefty, broad and ready to drink. Impressive given that its run is 45,000 cases.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Matarromera 2004 Reserva Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $45
Licorice candy and sweet black-fruit aromas control the nose along with a whiff of maple, while the palate is flush, baked and rich, with blackberry and chocolate. The focus isn’t 100% exact, so things turn a touch wayward on the back palate and finish. Very good but a touch scattered and generic.  — M.S.  (12/15/2009)
