  • Best Buy
  1. $16
Another lovely Viognier from McDowell Valley. Honeysuckle, apricot, butter, wildflower and citrus aromas. A nice wine, with big, fruity flavors and steely acidity that keeps it harmonious. Dry and elegant.  — S.H.  (6/1/1999)

McDowell 1999 Reserve - McDowell Valley Syrah (Mendocino)

  1. $24
Raspberry aromas and flavors dominate the McDowell—in the bouquet, they’re bolstered by blueberry and linseed aromas, and, on the palate, chocolate, earth and walnut flavors. Medium-weight and a little tart on the palate and on the long, toasty finish. Top Value.  — W.E.  (11/1/2001)

McDowell 1997 Mendocino Estate Syrah (Mendocino)

  1. $22
An oakier, more intense style than the regular Syrah. Shows berry, plum, violet, earth, oak and peppery notes, but is closed and tannic in the mouth. But the richness and concentration are there. Give it three or four years, then try again.  — S.H.  (6/1/1999)

McDowell 1997 Syrah (Mendocino)

Year in and year out, McDowell comes out with lovely, complex wines that display spicy fruit and leather notes. Conditions in 1997 were a little better than usual and this wine displays the richness of the vintage.  — M.G.  (11/15/1999)

McDowell 2003 Viognier (Mendocino County)

McDowell 1997 Marsanne (Mendocino)

  1. $16
This Rhône-specialist scores with a lemony, spicy wine, with vanilla, fig and pineapple flavors. So rich, it’s almost syrupy, but firm acids and elegant tannins make it come alive. The kind of wine everyone likes.  — S.H.  (6/1/1999)

McDowell 2006 Grenache Rosé (McDowell Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Blended with 5% Syrah, presumably for body and depth, this is really a nice rosé. It’s very dry and balanced in acidity, with succulent flavors of cherries, berries and gingery spices. Finishes with an earthy, tea-like grip of tannin.  — S.H.  (11/15/2007)
