McKinley Springs is showing a deft touch with its white wines. This one has absolutely lovely aromas of beeswax and honeysuckle, leading into lime and citrus on the palate. Long and refreshing, with no alcoholic burn despite its almost 15% alcohol.  — P.G.  (9/1/2009)

A blend of three quarters Chenin Blanc and one quarter Viognier, this fragrant and lively young white wine is loaded with pretty green and yellow fruits, nuances of citrus rind, and a textural freshness that keeps resonating through the finish.  — P.G.  (9/1/2009)

McKinley Springs 2004 Syrah (Horse Heaven Hills)

  1. $25
Deep, spicy and heavily extracted, this estate-grown Syrah is an excellent expression of a clear-cut Washington approach to the grape. The tangy blue fruit is etched in citrus rind, especially grapefruit, which gives it a marvelous acidic lift throughout the palate. Tight, young, sharp and focused, it promises good development over the next decade.  — P.G.  (5/1/2007)

McKinley Springs 2006 Malbec (Horse Heaven Hills)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $24
The best of the 2006 McKinley Springs reds, this overcomes a fairly heavy dose of vanilla-flavored oak and moves into mixed cherry, plum, mocha, coffee and spice. The barrel regimen is a bit much for the pretty fruit, but there is a good base for future improvement.  — P.G.  (9/1/2009)

McKinley Springs 2002 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $24
This new winery has a first release that is tough to peg. It is so incredibly dense and Port-like in color and aroma that you expect it to slam into the palate like a tropical storm, but it doesn’t hit quite that hard. Oxidized and showing more baking spices than fruit, it nonetheless is a flavorful effort that will bring some enjoyment in the near term.  — P.G.  (12/15/2004)

McKinley Springs 2006 Syrah (Horse Heaven Hills)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $24
It’s styled a bit like a Syrah from southern Oregon, which is to say, sharp and peppery. For Syrah it does not quite show the fruit density needed to adequately play off the heavy tannins, and the finish is a bit hot.  — P.G.  (9/1/2009)
