Malbec is gaining popularity in New Zealand, adding color and acidity to that country’s Bordeaux-style reds. This medium-weight wine boasts plenty of dark plummy flavors along with hints of chocolate and anise and cinnamon.

In beneficent vintages, Wairarapa is warm enough to yield good results with Bordeaux varieties, but this wine is just too green and herbaceous, bordering on green peppery.
