Meerlust 2001 Rubicon Red (Stellenbosch)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
Over a quarter of a century ago, this was one of the first South African Bordeaux blends. It is still one of the best, a ripely tannic, firm wine that owes a lot to the structure given by ripe grapes from mature vines. Great acidity, great black currant fruits, and great style.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)

Meerlust 2007 Rubicon Red (Stellenbosch)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $31
One of the best vintages of Rubicon to date, and for the price it’s a fantastic value that’s great for building up your cellar. Right now, the wine is still young and tight, with firm, gripping tannins that need some time to mellow. Fortunately, there’s a great concentrated black-fruit core and enough acidity alongside the tannins to support long-term aging. Spicy…  — L.B.  (5/1/2012)

Meerlust 2005 Rubicon Red (Stellenbosch)

  1. $28
A restrained, elegant nose of black fruit, plum, cherry and spice starts this serious blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from Chris Williams and Meerlust. Full-bodied, complex flavors of cedar, tobacco, mint and plum are juicy and savory. Tannins are taut but forgiving. The wine still needs to time to evolve, but is a study in brooding character.  — S.K.  (12/31/2009)

Meerlust 2000 Merlot (Stellenbosch)

  1. $25
Chocolaty and ripe on the nose, with cassis, plum, cola and eucalyptus aromas. As complex in the mouth, with blueberry and oak in addition to plum and cola. The wine has a racy mouthfeel yet is full bodied, with nice tannins and a solid finish.  — M.D.  (12/31/2006)

Meerlust 2004 Rubicon Red (Stellenbosch)

  1. $27
Intense, lingering aromas and flavors give this wine—a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc—a memorable edge. On the nose, a combination of savory spice and dark plum and chocolate lead, while the palate is rife with earthy spice, mint, cocoa and smoke. Complex but balanced and traditional, the wine will age well and pair well with complex…  — S.K.  (3/1/2009)

Meerlust 2000 Rubicon Red (Stellenbosch)

  1. $30
This Cab-dominant Bordeaux blend opens slowly, eventually showing blueberry, pastry, and cedar aromas. Tobacco and earth take the stage in the mouth, along with more blueberry and pie crust. The smooth, evolved tannins offer a seamless mouthfeel; will continue to evolve over the next five years. Imported by Maisons Marques & Domaines USA.  — M.D.  (7/1/2006)

Meerlust 2003 Merlot (Stellenbosch)

  1. $24
Savory and spicy aromas and an enticing mélange of spiced wood, cigar and berry give this wine an elegant and sumptuous edge. Balanced, smooth and unobtrusive in the way of a good Merlot, the wine still has substance and a good finish.  — S.K.  (6/1/2008)

Meerlust 2006 Rubicon Red (Stellenbosch)

  1. $29
This Cab-dominant Bordeaux-style blend needs some time to come around, with closed aromas of dark fruits, cedar, leather and cigar box trying to fully unfold in the bouquet. The mouthfeel is creamy but gripping, the texture like crushed velvet that lingers on the finish. Black berries and plum flavors fill the mouth, accented by herbal notes of thyme, sweet spice…  — L.B.  (12/31/2010)
