Melipal 2003 Reserve Malbec (Mendoza)

Driving and powerful. The nose offers balsamic notes along with piercing hints of road tar, crude oil, crushed lavender and leather. The palate is packed full of tobacco, citrus and bright berry fruit. Not the least bit soft, with a zesty mouthfeel that toes the line between balanced and overt. Will show its best in 2006–07. Melipal 2004 Reserve Malbec (Mendoza)

Rock steady from opening to close. The nose is earthy and toasty, but it’s the dark-fruit notes that score the major points. Zesty and full of ribald black cherry, raspberry and chocolate flavors. Finishes with another helping of fudge, and in the final analysis it fills the tank to the brim.

Pure and potent, with dark aromas that are softened slightly by hints of coconut and rose petals. The palate may be slightly syrupy, but the raspberry and plum flavors are fine, and the chocolaty aftertaste is hard to discount. Quite ripe and serious; just juicy enough to avoid being heavy. Piercing on the nose, with toasty oak scents, mint and lemon along with standard blackberry and raspberry. Feels good and tight, with a structured composition and bright flavors of cherry, plum and toast. Turns chocolaty and a touch salty on the finish. A nice, stocky, lively wine.

Melipal 2006 Ikella Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

Subtle on the nose, with coffee, mocha and berry aromas. The palate is built well and stirs up nary a gripe; it’s full of cherry and cassis fruit followed by mild espresso-like bitterness on the finish. It’s firm almost to the point of narrow, but for many that structure will be appreciated.
