Combines a delicate, floral lightness with a potent intricacy to produce a wine of vast intellectual interest. Extraordinarily rich and ripe, if a little high in alcohol. Shows great extract, with masses of squashed, gooey cherries, raspberries and oodles of spices. Feels opulent and dramatic, with smoky oak adding to the complex, almost feral layers. So much going on in the glass. Melville 2001 Carrie's Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)

Darker in color than the estate, and riper too, with black cherries that veer into blackberries. There are fascinating bursts of tangerine rind, roasted coffee, cinnamon and cola that add complexity. Feels a bit hot, with a slightly heavy sweetness toward the finish.  — S.H.  (10/1/2003)
