Mendel 2006 Unus Red (Mendoza)
Price
$50
Unus is 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, but what you need to know is that it’s 100% excellent. The nose features a rich blend of tobacco, baked plum and leather, while the palate is saturated, concentrated and tastes of cassis and blackberry. Clean, intense and complex

Mendel 2007 Unus Red (Mendoza)

$40
Big, lush and tightly structured, with cola and mocha aromas along with serious black fruit power and brightness. A pure and delicious Malbec-Cabernet wine with the full allotment of berry character, cola accents, dark spice and clarity. Drink now through 2014.

Mendel 2006 Malbec (Mendoza)
Price
$27
Highly respected winemaker Roberto de la Mota is a partner in Mendel, and this wine is dark, sultry and stylish. The nose features foresty moss notes on top of big black-fruit aromas, while the palate is expansive, mouthfilling, tannic and correct. Forward stuff, with meaty blackberry and toast flavors backed by a round finish with size and grit. Drink now through 2011.

Mendel 2009 Lunta Malbec (Mendoza)
Price
$20
Big, woody and pure, with attractive plum and berry aromas that bring earth and toast. The mouth is alert and features textured tannins, while the flavor profile is a bit rooty and sweet, with roasted black fruit and spice. Grabby, warm and stout on the finish.

Mendel 2008 Unus Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)
Price
$40
The cool, compromising 2008 vintage conditions are reflected here; the wine is jammy but a little green on the nose and at its core. The feel is heavy, lactic and rich, while the flavors are narrow and jammy, with prune, blackberry and grassy mint. There’s both overripe and underripe notes on this high-end blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Mendel 2007 Malbec (Mendoza)
Price
$30
Big, ripe, colorful and attractive, with leather and earth on the nose. The mouthfeel is a touch clanky, while the black fruit palate is broad and masculine as it shows a few holes in the fabric. With vanilla and mocha late, this is a nice Malbec with full tannins and grip.

Mendel 2008 Malbec (Mendoza)
Price
$30
By all accounts, 2008 was a tough vintage with cool weather, stunting frosts and ripeness issues. This wine seems afflicted: its opening is good, with coconut and floral shadings. But the palate is limited in richness and the flavors are standard, with char and barrel notes creating bitterness. Nice and honest for a subpar year.

Mendel 2010 Sémillon (Mendoza)
Price
$25
A challenging white wine that bears a resemblance to Bordeaux Sémillon. The nose starts out sweaty and with phosphorous, but it turns more honeyed and complex with airing. The palate is plump and balanced, with layered honey, melon, apple and pith flavors. By the time it finishes up, it’s showing complexity, butterscotch and white pepper notes. Interesting but not…
