Messina Hof 2007 Double Barrel Cabernet Franc (Texas)

  1. $14
Serious and solid, this Cab Franc delivers the goods with a complex nose of vanilla, coconut and orange clove pomanders layered over coffee and bittersweet chocolate. There’s nice fruit in the mouth, with plum and blackberry shot through with notes of cinnamon. Medium, oaky finish. Serve with roast beef. Best 2011–2012.  — W.E.  (5/1/2010)

Messina Hof 2008 Father and Son Cuvée Merrill's Vineyard Riesling (Texas)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Steadily improving Messina Hof from the Texas High Plains region puts in a strong showing with this flavorful and concentrated white. Indian spice with earthy undertones make for an appealing opening act while the slightly unctuous palate winds up with a stone fruit note.  — W.E.  (12/15/2009)

  1. $8
Fresh and flowery, with a seductive aromatic profile of gardenia, freesia and honeysuckle that lead to a very likeable, berryish palate. Light-bodied and off-dry, this is a good choice to serve on its own before a meal. Drink now to 2011.  — W.E.  (5/1/2010)

Messina Hof 2006 Private Reserve Double Barrel Shiraz (Texas)

  1. $22
This wine has a very direct appeal, with blueberry and boysenberry fruit, shot through with notes of earth and mushroom. The palate is juicy, smooth and reasonably crisp. Medium finish shows notes of forest floor and no tannin. Try with tuna in a bold sauce.  — W.E.  (5/1/2010)

Messina Hof 2009 Private Reserve Chardonnay (Texas)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $17
Rich with cream, butter and salted popcorn notes, this is a Chard for oak hounds, but it’s also got a lot of nice, fresh lemony acidity and some pretty apple flavors as well. It’s dry and medium bodied with just a hint of green wood on the finish, but overall, an easygoing wine that would pair well with an array of lighter fowl or fish dishes.  — A.I.  (7/1/2011)

Messina Hof 2008 Angel Late Harvest Riesling (Texas)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Classic late-harvest Riesling with opening notes of peach and stone fruit. The sweet but racy palate is home to nectarine and white flowers shot through with a streak of acidity. Not overly generous but a good reflection of the category. Great for after-dinner sipping. May improve with a few years’ age but drinking well now.  — W.E.  (12/15/2009)

  1. $15
A bright and fresh character gives this Chardonnay a versatile appeal. Aromas of citrus and spice lead into cheerful fruit flavors with a touch of crisp acid. A touch lean in nature but a good choice for seafood and spicy cuisine.  — S.K.  (4/1/2009)
